PIGS PROJECT

We targeted the Kagaa self-help group, based in the local town of Gaichanjiru, where over 90% of the 3500 villagers are subsistence farmers, living on less than £1.50 per day. The group consists of 25 villagers living under the poverty line.
We took inspiration from Grameen bank principles, targeting women and focusing on peer pressure as a means of the group sharing the loan and then repaying. We call our project the **Gaichanjiru Circulation.
* Firstly, MASH loans a pregnant sow to a single group member, financed by Kenterprise. Once the sow has given birth, the first member passes on two of the piglets to the second member.
* The process, known as the ‘Circulation’ continues.
* Finally, the last member receiving the loan repays the loan to MASH.

Impacts
1. Entrepreneurial empowerment: Mrs. Thomas used early profit from 6 piglets to purchase two 2000 litre water storage tanks to grow hay and paw-paw fruits for further income.
2. Impacting standard of living: Mrs. Thomas also bought iron sheets for the roof of her family home.
3. Sustainability: Soon after the previous video Mrs.Thomas passed on two piglets to the Gaichanjiru Circulation, continuing the sustainable process and avoiding the issue of inflation associated with financial lending.
