Brook Safi

The year 2013 marked the beginning of Kenterprise’s collaboration with the Brook School Recycling Project. Brook School for Deaf and Autistic Children is a self-funding independent school that endeavours to provide education and a home to children suffering from disabilities.

To finance its operating costs, Brook school runs a recycling project in its local community: employees collect and sort rubbish, earning revenue from the collection service as well as the resale of recyclables. The key contact has been the headmaster, Mr Timothy Liani, who has initiated the project at the inception of Brook School.

The Brook School team at Kenterprise identified several aspects of the setup in need of improvement:

- Use of plastic bags for rubbish collection: at a cost of £111/month, the use of plastic bags is costly and unsustainable

- Health & safety: plastic bags contribute to litter and poor hygiene in the neighbourhood

We have addressed these problems by coming up with the following solutions:

- Introducing shared rubbish bins in the neighbourhood.

This eliminates the need for plastic bags, thus reducing costs and littering By substituting plastic bags with trash bins, Brook School stands to increase its profits, which may be further reinvestment in school amenities and pupil intake. A 18%-22% profit increase is expected from the implementation of these bins.
